You've Just Gotta Love a Drop Waist...

Well would you look at our stunning new Gatsby inspired window?  However you feel about the film, and let me just say we know how the conversation starts, ‘Well I REALLY loved the book, bla bla bla, Maguire was miscast, style over substance etc.’  Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation aside, we just can’t help loving those roaring 20s!
Is it the glamour, the jazz or those wide-brimmed champagne glasses that hold nothing and spill everywhere?  No, it has to be those muffin-top concealing drop-waisted frocks that do it for us.  Throw one on for a summer wedding and not only will you be bang on trend but you can take full advantage of the free food and open bar.  Be it vintage or modern, Poiret or Topshop, we’ve got a bit of beading for every budget.  Visit our Grassmarket shop for a full selection of fringed frocks!

KL, Chanel and Beyond...

Karl Lagerfeld, a name synonymous with that double C logo, famous for rejuvenating the tweed suit with a few strings of pearls, gold chains and camellias.  Catching it post Coco on the way into potential obscurity and elevating it with the help of a few jaw-droppingly stunning ladies; Claudia Schiffer, Nicole Kidman... to name but a few.

Karl Lagerfeld however is not a name merely tied to his Chanel predecessor.  The workaholic with the acid tongue and widely publicised eating disorder has more than one string to his bow.  This is a man who supplies costumes for operas, designs sets, photographs and creates diffusion lines before breakfast.

Last week we received this little combo of early 90s de-constructed craftsmanship with all the signature nods to the numerous incarnations of that most famous of two-pieces... and a few rather interesting additions.  Note the two-tone sleeve, shredded skirt and concealed button fastenings.  Lagerfeld launched his own name in 1984 with the aim of challenging female intellectual sexiness after joining Chanel the previous year.

This piece epitomises the early 90s aesthetic of the working woman however the straight cut of the garment, mannish square pockets and two tone jacket can be seen in contemporary pieces also (see the Richard Nicoll piece left).  Let us not forget Lagerfeld took his apprenticeship with Balmain (image below right), this is a man who understands a sculptural silhouette, the ideas that this can project and the voice that it can give its wearer.

The KL suit (main picture) is an unusual slice of history with its references to the past and nods to the future and goes live on our Ebay shop at 9pm tonight.

‘(Lagerfeld’s KL diffusion line), allows him the freedom he needs to dip into the delights of both mass-market and couture.’

Raindrops Keep Falling

Festival season is nearly upon us and as any good festival goer knows that all you really need to survive the glut of overpriced noodles, overflowing toilets and shock downpours is a decent raincoat.  This year I will be taking inspiration from Singing in the Rain, and argue the case of the yellow PVC mac.  Yellow is often accused of being unflattering as, against a rather pale, British complexion, it can leave one looking dull and washed out.  Yet if ever there was a time for yellow PVC, festival season is surely it; sunny in colour, highly practical as a beacon to locate friends or a stray tent and most importantly you will be the envy of every plastic poncho clad lesser mortal around you!

Rubberised fabric or the ‘Macintosh’ goes back to 1824 and was patented in none other than sunny Scotland, home of our very own Armstrongs.  Luckily for us the manufacturers quickly overcame the product’s rather unusual smell, stiffness and tendency to melt in high temperatures and a fashion staple was born.

The little yellow stunner above will be available on Armstrongs Ebay from 9pm Sunday 30th April however if you are a little more country heritage than psychedelic rubber here is a wee selection of some of our super sexy Barbours and wax jackets.

Competition time!

Competition time!  In the name of all things Mad Men we’re looking to give away a set of super cute retro floral dish cloths.  Just to run with the cooking theme we thought we’d go with a Betty Draper inspired kitchen get up.  Send us a Facebook message with your images of you and your friends in your favourite retro ensembles cooking up a storm of prawn cocktails, pies and trifles for a chance to win all of these little beauties.  Photos will be exhibited on our online gallery (OK, the Armstrongs Blog) and just to show you that we too love to make fools of ourselves, we will be following suit and documenting our own cooking disasters as well...
